Lotte Wubben-Moy ended the game wearing the Arsenal captain’s armband as they beat Aston Villa 2-0 to reach the fifth round of the Women’s FA Cup.

Both goals came in the second half – Stina Blackstenius in the 52nd minute, and Kim Little ten minutes later.

And Wubben-Moy – who slotted in to defence in the place of the injured Leah Williamson – told broadcaster Channel 4 afterwards how she was feeling following the victory.

“We were pretty unlucky to be getting Aston Villa in this round,” she told interviewer Fern Whelan. “They’re a tough team to play. We obviously play them week in, week out in the WSL. We’re pretty familiar with their strengths – a lot of speed up top.

“Credit to the team, we nullified their threats, we were able to press them high. Ultimately we played some pretty good football in the second half to be able to get us the win.

“Arsenal is a club that’s meant for the FA Cup. Let’s hope we can start this run strong.”

Lotte Wubben-Moy: Renee Slegers believes in us

And asked what head coach Renee Slegers had said at half-time to reinvigorate the team, Wubben-Moy replied: “As she does, week in week out, she believes in us. The goals haven’t been coming, and to get a second half like that – with two goals, two goalscorers, and create a lot more chances too – is a credit to us, a credit to our game-changers and the depth of our squad.

“It’s an enjoyable game as a centre back…to be able to get a clean sheet and let our forwards do their thing.”

And Slegers herself spoke a little bit more about the specifics of what she told her players: “It’s the detail, it was about details on where we could find spaces and how we could get players on the ball but also just about the basics on the pitch – create margins on the pitch for yourself to be able to play.”
