The Crystal Palace loanee bagged his first goal for the Sky Blues after joining the team earlier this month.

His 11th minute strike gave Frank Lampard’s side the lead before Mihailo Ivanovic pulled one back for the visitors on the half-hour mark.

Haji Wright’s second half goal secured all three points for Coventry, who have maintained their gap at the top of the Championship table.

Esse came through the Lions’ academy system before moving to Selhurst Park in January 2025, having been a key player at the Den prior to his exit.

Esse issued a message to the Millwall fans following his goal against his former club on Tuesday night, claiming that it was a bittersweet moment for him.

His goal was crucial to Coventry earning an important three points, but he has expressed his love for his old club, staff and teammates from the Den.

“Another big result grateful for all the support,” wrote Esse, via his personal X account.

“Delighted to score my first home goal, felt bittersweet against my old club.

“Everyone who knows me knows how much love and respect I have for my old club and teammates and staff at Millwall.

“God bless you all.”

Esse joined Coventry earlier this month on loan from Crystal Palace, having struggled for game time in the Premier League under Oliver Glasner, making just 11 appearances across the last 12 months.

Prior to his move to Selhurst Park, the 20-year-old made 61 appearances in the Championship, scoring six times.

Meanwhile, Lampard’s side maintained their eight point lead over second place Ipswich Town with their win, and moved three further ahead of Middlesbrough before their clash this evening against Stoke City.

The gap to the Teesside outfit is currently nine points, with the club eyeing a return to the Premier League for the first time since 2001.

Next up for Coventry is a trip to face Norwich City on 26 January in an 8pm kick-off.

Romain Esse goal shows what he brings to Coventry

Esse getting his first goal in just his second game for the club shows how useful he could prove in Coventry’s pursuit of promotion.

The winger excelled at Millwall, but struggled for consistent minutes in the Premier League, so this loan could prove quite beneficial for his development.

His first goal coming against the Lions is bittersweet for the 20-year-old, who obviously still has a lot of fond memories of his time with the London outfit.

Lampard will be hoping that it’s the first of many goals in this second half of the campaign.
