Southampton enter the final three days of the January window juggling possible exits and late reinforcements. Everton, West Ham and Burnley are linked with Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Adam Armstrong is being scouted, and Sport Republic seek a striker and H-B cover.
Trimming wages comes first. Sam Edozie has not featured this season, and overseas interest means a sale should be sought. Joe Aribo has played only seven times and not since December, clearly out of Tonda Eckert’s plans, and the club have already moved on Gavin Bazunu, Ryan Fraser, Damion Downs and Ronnie Edwards this month.
Keeping their top scorer matters. Middlesbrough and Wrexham are tracking Armstrong, who has 11 goals, 4 assists and 24 starts in 29 league games. "There is a lot of noise and I think that is normal in every single window." "Adam Armstrong is a great player, and we are doing everything at the moment to give him the final little bit of touch that every striker needs," he told BBC Radio Solent.
Depth is needed up front, whether a different striker profile or a winger, as any setback to Leo Scienza could further derail the season. "I would love to tell you something concrete [on incomings], but it's tough. We're working on some bits. We're having some good conversations, and I think there are some bits that are moving forward," he told the Daily Echo.
With under 72 hours before the window closes on Monday, 2nd February at 19:00, plenty remains to do.
