It is a year to the day since Granit Xhaka departed Arsenal to join Bayer Leverkusen, where he would go on to help lead the side to an undefeated domestic double.

Will he be involved in another English exit 12 months on? The midfielder has passed a fitness test after concerns over his condition in the wake of the win over Italy and it will be music to Swiss’ ears given how he has performed so far this summer.

In fact, Xhaka is now just one European Championship Man of the Match award away from registering more than any other player (six, level with Cristiano Ronaldo and Andrés Iniesta) – and he already has two under his belt in Germany.

That is no surprise given that he has created more chances (eight), completed more passes (254) and made more line-breaking passes (51) than any other Swiss player at EURO 2024.

Fun facts 📊

  • England haven’t lost to Switzerland since a World Cup qualifier in 1981 which is their only defeat in the last 24 meetings between the sides.
  • After losing six of their first eight European Championship games, the Swiss have now been beaten just once in their last 14 games (winning five and drawing eight).
  • Türkiye have already picked up 18 yellow cards at EURO 2024. In competition history, only the Czech Republic in 1996 have picked up more in a single edition of the tournament (20: 19 yellows and one red).
  • Although the Netherlands have advanced from five of their last seven major tournament quarter-finals, they have won just three of their last nine Euros knockout ties.
