What to take away from the refereeing in El Clásico?

The Clásico between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona (2-1) was marked by several major refereeing decisions. Former referee Iturralde González, now a consultant for AS, closely analyzed César Soto Grado’s performance.

Early penalty for Real Madrid overturned

The referee initially awarded a foul by Lamine Yamal on Vinicius Jr., but reversed his decision after a VAR review.

According to González: “Vinicius encroaches on Yamal’s space; he’s the one who commits the foul. Correct decision.

The 2-1 goal was rightly allowed

Some called for a foul by Huijsen on Cubarsí during the aerial duel.

The expert sums it up:

Cubarsí couldn’t play the ball anyway. The goal stands.

Clear penalty in the second half

Barcelona handball in the box: for González, there’s no doubt. “The arm moves toward the ball: that’s a penalty.”

Wojciech Szczęsny saved Mbappé’s penalty, but that didn’t stop Real from clinching victory and extending their lead at the top of LaLiga, now five points clear of Barça.
