Since the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital takeover in 2022, there’s been a drastic shift in policy with the Blues focused on signing young players.

Chelsea also now offer long term contracts with players often signing six, seven or eight year deals when they join the club.

Roy Keane on Enzo Fernandez comments

The long contracts give Chelsea more control over the future of their players, and also protects their value if they want to leave.

The deals are also heavily incentivised, with many players on a much lower base salary than those at rival clubs in the league.

If the Blues miss out on Champions League football players won’t receive their bonuses, and there’s a worry top stars will want out.

Liam Rosenior has insisted no star players have asked to leave, but Fernandez cast doubt over his future following the defeat to PSG.

Whether Fernandez leaves or not remains to be seen, but Keane has said he wouldn’t take those comments lightly if he were Chelsea.

“He is a good player, but comes the summer, if you’re not really all happy with that stuff, you can go,” he told The Overlap.

“That’s what you do with him.”

Jame Carragher and Ian Wright were more sympathetic towards those players who may want to leave, but Keane didn’t agree.

“They signed the deals, though,” he added.

“I’ve no sympathy for them. They signed the deals.”

Cole Palmer deemed untouchable

Whilst it’s unclear whether Fernandez will be at Chelsea next season, it looks like Cole Palmer will be staying put this summer.

It’s been reported Palmer is untouchable at Chelsea, and even if the Blues missed out on Champions League football that wouldn’t have an impact on his future.
