Carlos Corberan departed West Brom for Valencia in December 2024
Carlos Corberan’s departure from West Brom came midway through the 2024/25 campaign, with the club in the mix for a play-off place.
The Spaniard was well-liked by Baggies supporters, and he’d earned a lot of plaudits for his work with the club.
The 42-year-old oversaw a fifth place finish in the previous campaign, but a play-off semi-final defeat to Southampton consigned them to another year in the Championship.
His departure signalled a downturn in performances for Albion, with the side falling to ninth in the table under Tony Mowbray.
Here we take a look at how Corberan has got on since he made the switch to Valencia from West Brom in December 2024…
Valencia were 19th in La Liga when Corberan oversaw his first game in charge on 3 January.
The Spanish giants took on Real Madrid, and held a 1-0 lead into the start of the second half, but ultimately lost 2-1 due to goals from Luke Modric and Jude Bellingham in the final 10 minutes.
But their form picked up, as they lost just one of their next six games in the top flight — albeit it was a 7-1 defeat to Barcelona.
Wins over Real Sociedad, Celta Vigo and Leganes by 9 February had the team up and running under Corberan, and gave supporters plenty of reason for optimism.
A run of one in five after that did see Corberan hit a bump in the road, but consecutive victories over Mallorca, Real Madrid and Sevilla got things back on track in April.
Valencia ultimately finished 12th in La Liga by the end of the campaign, comfortably avoiding any threat of relegation.
A tally of 46 points meant they were as close to European qualification as they were the bottom three, with six points separating them from both eighth and 18th.
Taking into account just the fixtures in La Liga from Corberan’s first game in charge, they earned enough points to finish seventh, with a record of 34 points in 21 games.
Over a 38 game season that equals 61 points, which would’ve put them sixth in the 2024/25 table, enough for Europa League qualification.
Valencia have been active in the summer transfer market ahead of Corberan’s first full campaign in charge of the club.
The Spanish side have added José Copete, Julen Agirrezbala and Dani Raba to the first team squad.
Agirrezbala has signed on loan from league rivals Athletic Club, while Copete has arrived on a permanent basis from Mallorca.
Raba has made the move from the second tier into the top flight, joining from Leganés as a free agent.
Valencia will be hoping to compete for a top seven finish in La Liga this season, with Corberan being backed in the transfer market with only limited funds.
The 42-year-old has further enhanced his reputation since leaving West Brom, but will have a tough task on his hands to compete with the big teams in the Spanish top flight next season.
