Willum Willumsson played a key role in Birmingham's promotion-winning season in 2024/25, but what has happened to the Icelander since he departed?

Birmingham City will be looking to build on plenty of positives from the 2025/26 season, as they target a top-six finish in the Championship in next year's league campaign.

Chris Davies' side finished tenth in the second-tier standings in their first season back in the Championship, and they'll fancy their chances of continuing to push in the right direction moving forward.

The promotion-winning season of 2024/25 was a memorable one for Birmingham City's supporters, with the club finishing top of the League One table on 111 points, which is a new EFL record points total.

The likes of Jay Stansfield, Alfie May, Keshi Anderson, and Paik Seung-ho played starring roles in that promotion-winning campaign, and some of them have gone on to feature regularly in the Championship for the Blues.

However, some players have pursued options elsewhere during the 2025/26 season, and some moves have paid off better than others for certain players.

Willum Willumsson's impact with Birmingham City

Willum Willumsson played his part in his brief spell with the club, and is a player that will be remembered fondly for what he achieved with the Blues.

The Icelandic international signed for Birmingham in July 2024 for an undisclosed fee from Dutch side, Go Ahead Eagles, where he spent two years of his career.

Willumsson went on to feature regularly for the Blues in their League One campaign last season, as he made 41 appearances in total. He made a notable impact as well, chipping in with six goals and six assists for Chris Davies' men, as they stormed to the League One title.

The midfielder found it tough to chip in with goal contributions in the second-half of that title-winning campaign, as he only scored and assisted once in 2025, which came in the same game against Mansfield Town, where Birmingham ran out convincing 4-0 winners in late April.

Willumsson wasn't given much of an opportunity in the Championship with Birmingham in the 2025/26 campaign. He featured in three of their first four league matches in the second-tier, before not being included in the matchday squad for three months.

His next appearance for Birmingham came in late December against Sheffield United, but he struggled to nail down a place in the starting XI on a regular basis, which wasn't too surprising, as Chris Davies had stronger options available to him.

Willumsson's Birmingham City departure

With limited game time, Willumsson opted to move back to the Netherlands, as he signed for NEC Nijmegen in February 2026 for an undisclosed fee.

He penned a two-and-a-half-year deal with the Dutch side, who went on to have quite a remarkable season in the top-flight, as they competed with the likes of PSV and Ajax in the top-six.

NEC Nijmegen finished third in the table, which was their highest-ever finish in the Eredivisie table. Willumsson found it tough to find regular minutes with the high-flying Dutch side during their impressive second-half of the 2025/26 league campaign, as he made just six appearances in all competitions.

The 27-year-old will certainly feel as though he has something to offer them heading into his first full season with NEC Nijmegen, and he'll be hoping to hit the ground running at the earliest opportunity.

Birmingham City certainly won't regret letting Willumsson depart when they did, as they simply had better options available. He wasn't a regular starter for them in the Championship last season, and a move elsewhere was the ideal move for all parties involved.

The Blues are a club with a serious amount of ambition, and plenty of other players will depart the club over the next few years, as they look to build a squad capable of challenging for a long overdue promotion back into the Premier League.
