Tottenham Hotspur’s 48-season top-flight stay is at risk. They are 16th, five points above 18th-placed West Ham after eight winless league games. Relegation would be huge for a club this size, though Thomas Frank’s exit and Igor Tudor’s interim arrival may yet lift them.
As The Athletic sets out, the current Premier League can be ordered by top-flight streaks and each club’s most recent relegation. Arsenal have been up since 1919-20, last down in 1912-13, Everton since 1954-55, last 1950-51, and Liverpool since 1962-63, last 1953-54.
Manchester United returned in 1975-76 after relegation in 1973-74 and are on a 51-season run, 15th in 2024-25 their worst since. Tottenham last went down in 1976-77, came straight back in 1977-78 and have remained since 1978-79.
Chelsea have been top flight since 1989-90, last relegated in 1987-88 via a brief play-off system. Manchester City’s current stay began in 2002-03, their last drop in 2000-01.
West Ham have been up since 2012-13, last relegated in 2010-11. Crystal Palace’s present spell started in 2013-14, last down in 2004-05. Brighton returned in 2017-18, last relegated in 1982-83, and should almost certainly reach 10 seasons next year.
Newcastle rejoined in 2017-18 after 2015-16 and have stabilised. Wolves have been up since 2018-19, last fell in 2011-12.
Aston Villa (since 2019-20, last 2015-16), Brentford (2021-22, 1946-47), Bournemouth (2022-23, 2019-20), Fulham (2022-23, 2020-21) and Nottingham Forest (2022-23, 1998-99) are followed by Burnley (2025-26, 2023-24), Leeds (2025-26, 2022-23) and Sunderland (2025-26, 2016-17).
