Tottenham have a new No8 but fellow summer signings are yet to be allocated a squad number
Tottenham have issued an update regarding shirt number announcement for summer signings, after confirming Conor Gallagher’s switch.
Spurs have already completed three deals this summer, all for defenders with Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi joining on free transfers from Liverpool and Bournemouth respectively.
Jan Paul van Hecke’s move from Brighton was then confirmed on Thursday evening with Tottenham spending £52million to reunite the Dutchman with Roberto De Zerbi.
Of the three new arrivals, only Senesi’s shirt number has been revealed so far. The Argentina international will wear No5 for Spurs, last worn by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in the 2023-24 season.
Interestingly, Robertson wore No26 during nine successful years with Liverpool but that shirt number has been ‘quietly retired’ due to it being inactive since Ledley King retired in 2012.
Van Hecke, meanwhile, switched from No29 to No6 during his final season at Brighton but that shirt number is currently taken by Joao Palhinha, who was on loan at Spurs and a decision regarding his future has yet to be communicated.
Spurs have since confirmed that squad numbers for all senior players remain subject to change, aside from Senesi and Gallagher, with the latter switching from No22 to No8 after Yves Bissouma’s summer exit.
A statement reads: “Supporters are reminded that, aside from Conor and new signing Marcos Senesi, who has been confirmed to wear number five, squad numbers for all players remain subject to change, with the full finalised list to be confirmed when the club submits its final squad list to the Premier League prior to the opening weekend of the 2026/27 season.”

Discussing his decision to change squad numbers ahead of the new season, Gallagher said: “It’s an honour to wear the number eight shirt.
“I’ve never actually worn it at club level in my career, so I’m excited – it’s always been my favourite number.
“Some of my favourite footballers growing up also wore eight, so I’m looking forward to pulling on the jersey for this fantastic club.
“I’m hoping for a big season and to make our fans proud.”
Tottenham begin the new Premier League season with a London derby away at Brentford, with their first home game coming against Newcastle.
