Manchester United stand to break an ignominious record as they visit West Ham on Tuesday night with a fifth consecutive win in their sights.

The Red Devils have been in dire straits for some time now but are rejuvenated under new boss Michael Carrick.

They have won all four of their matches since he got the call-up to take over from Ruben Amorim until the end of the season, and now face the chance of clinching a coveted fifth victory on the spin.

The five-match mark has come under particular scrutiny due to the exploits of one fan, Frank Illett, better known online as The United Strand, who has found fame by refusing to cut his hair until United reach the five-win milestone.

His challenge began in October 2024 with Illett sporting a buzz-cut. His face is now barely visible under a wall of bushy curls.

Some 1.2million people are following his journey on Instagram, with a further 1m following on TikTok.

Should United get the better of Carrick’s boyhood club West Ham on Tuesday, though, he will finally be able to get a trim, and Illett has said he would like to have his hair cut by a current United player at Old Trafford.

It has been two full years since United won five straight, with that run coming between January and February of 2024 under Erik ten Hag.

He led United to an FA Cup defeat of Newport County, followed by league triumphs over Wolves, West Ha,, Aston Villa, and Luton Town before Fulham finally brought the run to an end.

Under Amorim’s leadership, United never managed more than three straight victories, beating Rangers, Fulham, and FCSB in January 2025.

They have not won five consecutive Premier League matches since 2023. They won four on the spin to cap the 2022-23 campaign before beating Wolves on the opening day of the following season.

United’s current run has seen them beat Manchester City, Arsenal, Fulham and Tottenham.
