Manchester City have now announced their initial plans for first-team training activities ahead of this summer’s FIFA Club World Cup.

The newly-formatted tournament will be held in the United States between mid-June and mid-July and will see 32 clubs face off as Pep Guardiola and co begin their preparations for the 2025-26 campaign after a disappointing 2024-25 season.

An FA Cup final defeat to Crystal Palace piled on the misery for Guardiola, who has seen his side uncharacteristically fall off after four straight years winning the Premier League – as well as exiting the UEFA Champions League before the last-16 courtesy of a 6-2 aggregate loss to Real Madrid.

Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak has made it clear that the club are going to the Club World Cup to win and will likely have all new signings in the door to feature in the tournament, with the club eyeing four to five fresh arrivals this summer.

The City first-team have been given a few weeks off to recover and recuperate after a long, strenuous campaign and with the Club World Cup on the horizon, there is little time to rest for a team that have a point to prove to themselves as they make the journey to the United States.

As confirmed on Manchester City’s official club website, and following a short break for some of Pep Guardiola’s players, first-team training will resume for those not involved with their respective national teams on Monday 9 June.

It remains to be seen whether any major outgoings materialise in the 10-day transfer window between June 1-10 in addition to Kevin De Bruyne, who is joining Napoli on a free transfer after being told he does not feature in Manchester City’s plans next season.

Lyon’s Rayan Cherki and AC Milan’s Tijjani Reijnders are expected through the door in the coming week as Manchester City finalise a transfer fee for the midfield duo after advancing negotiations – having pulled out of the race for Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz.

City will face Wydad AC, Al Ain and Juventus in their group-stage fixtures to kick off the Club World Cup, a tournament that will also give Guardiola the platform to assess several first-team players whose future(s) have come into question ahead of next season.

James McAtee will be unavailable after the 22-year-old midfielder was named in Lee Carsley’s England squad for the U-21 international. McAtee is expected to seal a permanent transfer amidst interest from a number of Bundesliga clubs.

Guardiola confirmed in May that Kyle Walker will not be part of the travelling squad for the Club World Cup as the Sheffield-born defender searches for a new club after being told he has no future at the Etihad Stadium as he enters the final 12 months of his contract.

Kalvin Phillips has undergone surgery on an Achilles injury and is expected back in August – which means the 29-year-old is also ruled out of the tournament when ordinarily, Pep Guardiola would probably have used the player to phase Rodri back into the team in addition to Nico, with Mateo Kovacic also having undergone surgery.
