NJ/NY Gotham FC and the rest of the NWSL are about two months away from the start of the 2025 season. The Bats had quite a few changes to their roster and one can assume they are close to completing the team. Some of the new signings include Stella Nyamekye, Gabi Portilho, and Sarah Schupansky.
Meanwhile, Gotham FC brought back a couple of free agents, re-signing Mandy Freeman and Jéssica Silva to new contracts. So far, most of the free agents either went elsewhere or will not return for the 2025 season. Truthfully, the one question that remains is Midge Purce.
During the 2023 season, despite a few injury issues, Purce helped lead Gotham to the NWSL Championship win. She was vital to the team, as she has been through the good and the bad. However, after she was expected to soar in 2024, her season was cut short early after she tore her ACL in the NWSL regular-season opener.
As a result, could not play in the final year of her contract. More times than none, players want to play well when they are in the final year of their contract. By playing well, they can often obtain a new and improved contract with the same team or a new one.
Therefore, Purce would be utilizing her previous seasons when negotiating her contract. By looking at what the forward brings on the wings, she should easily be guaranteed more money. The question at hand is whether she will return to Gotham FC or will she sign elsewhere in the NWSL? Or, will she travel overseas and sign with a club in Europe?
Supporters would love to know the answer, and surely the NJ/NY side would love to know as well. They have players who can play as the right-winger despite the Yazmeen Ryan trade.
Still, Purce's play on the wings makes her one of the best wingers in the NWSL. She creates chances for her teammates and even had four goals and four assists during the regular season in 2023. Her dribbling abilities really stand out since she can push the ball forward, allowing more distance with the ball due to her speed.
Hopefully, Gotham is doing everything they can to bring the winger back. But will Purce sign a new contract? Or has she played her final game with the Bats? Moreover, when will everyone know the answer? Is she waiting until she receives every final offer? Or is the player truly undecided?
There is time before the season begins. At the same time, the previous campaign ended over two months ago. It would be nice to know the answer so not only can the team know, but the fans too. They would prefer for Purce to return to Gotham FC, especially with Lynn Williams and Ryan leaving via trade. More importantly, she has been with the club since 2020 and has become one of the faces of the team. A return would impact the Bats on and off the pitch.
Nobody knows how much longer Purce will take to decide where she will play next. For Gotham FC, the best scenario would be her returning on a new long-term contract.
