The Blues are back in the Championship following their successful League One title-winning campaign last year.

Chris Davies oversaw a 111-point season, breaking the points record for the third tier as the Midlands outfit earned promotion at the first attempt.

The club’s ambitious American owner Tom Wagner will be keen to see the side back in the Premier League soon, with their last stint in the division ending in 2011.

Here we compare how the proposed capacity of their new stadium will compare with some of the biggest stadiums in the United Kingdom…

The biggest stadiums in the UK

It has been reported that the new Birmingham stadium will have a capacity of 62,000, which is far greater than the current limit at St. Andrew’s.

The current home of the Blues can hold up to roughly 29,000 fans, which ranks 11th among the sides in the Championship this season.

The 62,000 figure being touted would put Birmingham well clear of top spot at the moment, which is held by Sheffield Wednesday’s Hillsborough.

Hillsborough can hold up to roughly 39,000, although the closing of the North Stand means that figure has been reduced for this campaign.

In terms of the biggest stadiums across the UK, the 62,000 figure would rank the Midlands outfit eighth across all sports, just ahead of Anfield and below the London Stadium.

Wembley Stadium currently holds the number one spot, with the home of the England national team capable of 90,000 in attendance.

The biggest stadium in the Premier League is Old Trafford, with Manchester United’s home ground holding a capacity of roughly 74,000, which is the third biggest of any stadium in the UK.

Twickenham has the honour of being second, with the home of English rugby able to hold 82,000.

Birmingham supporters will be glad to know that Villa Park ranks 17th at the moment, with their rivals Aston Villa capable of hosting roughly 42,000 to see Unai Emery’s side.

Birmingham City’s stadium plans

Birmingham are reportedly planning to build a Sports Quarter along with their new stadium that will also include new training facilities.

It will mean moving from St. Andrew’s, which has been the home to the senior first team since 1906, so this will be a major step for the Championship side.

These are ambitious plans from Wagner, who purchased his stake in the club in July 2023.

The American had a difficult start to life as the owner of Birmingham, with the team suffering relegation to League One in his first season.

But the side are now on the right track again, having earned promotion in 2025 under Davies.

It’s understood that the club’s plans are for the stadium to be open by 2030, so there is still plenty of time before supporters can think about the move.
