Nashville SC fans who attended Saturday night's 7-2 victory over the visiting Chicago Fire at Geodis Park were witnesses to MLS goal-scoring history.

With the blowout win, Nashville became the only the 13th team to score seven or more in an MLS match since the league launched in 1996. They also became only the 11th club to accomplish the feat (The LA Galaxy have done it three times), and the first team to reach seven goals that began MLS play in 2020 or later.

Further, while the Coyotes fell a goal shy of the MLS record of eight goals, still held by the 1998 LA Galaxy, Nashville's seven-spot is the first posted by any team in nearly three seasons. The 2022 Philadelphia Union were the last to reach the mark in a 7-0 home win over D.C. United on July 8, 2022.

Surridge's special night

Striker Sam Surridge was the star man with four goals on the night, including two from the penalty spot.

His performance marks the 19th time an MLS player has scored four or more in an MLS league match and the second this season. Brian White first accomplished the feat in Vancouver's 5-1 win over Austin FC on April 12.

Surrigde is only the 17th MLS player to accomplish to record a four-goal night. (Mamadou Diallo and Raul Diaz Arce each scored four on two occasions.)

Like his team, Surridge fell one goal shy of the MLS record, still held by Clint Mathis, who scored five times in the New York MetroStars' 6-4 win over the Dallas Burn on Aug. 26, 2000.

A sign of things to come?

If you're a Nashville fan looking for an indication that this could mean big things ahead for your team, the news there isn't as good.

Of the 12 previous teams to score seven or more goals in a game, only two have reached an MLS Cup final. Both the 2020 Seattle Sounders and 2022 Philadelphia Union ended up on the losing end of their respective finals.
