Three Lions face daunting challenge against in-form tournament co-hosts at the Estadio Azteca

A place in the quarter-finals is up for grabs as the Three Lions face the tournament co-hosts at their high-altitude Estadio Azteca fortress in Mexico City - a formidable venue where El Tri have lost only two of 89 competitive matches dating back 60 years.

It is a significant challenge and step up for England, who needed Harry Kane’s late heroics to avoid a major upset against DR Congo in the last 32 in Atlanta on Wednesday, having beaten both Croatia and Panama either side of a draw with Ghana to top Group L.

Backed by a passionate and intense home crowd at a ground steeped in rich World Cup history, Mexico will be confident of securing a first win over England since 1985 having not faced them for 16 years since losing a friendly 3-1 at Wembley.

They eased to the summit of Group A with three wins before defying an hour-long weather delay to brush aside Ecuador 2-0 and register their first knockout win on football’s biggest stage since they last hosted in 1986. They have yet to concede a single goal at these finals, scoring eight.

Fears over the threat of more thunderstorms and heavy rain in Mexico City on Sunday evening led to talks over bringing the game forward to a 7pm BST (12pm local time) kick-off, though it was later confirmed that the fixture will remain at 1am BST (6pm local time) as originally planned.

Either Brazil or Norway will await the winners of this game in the quarter-finals in Miami on July 11, with those two nations going head to head in New Jersey before Mexico vs England.

TV channel: ITV and the BBC continue to share broadcasting rights to the World Cup - one of the so-called sporting ‘crown jewels’ that has to remain on free-to-air television - in the UK, with England having featured on both stations during this tournament so far.

Their thrilling six-goal opener against Croatia was shown live on ITV1, while the turgid stalemate against Ghana was broadcast on BBC One.

England were back on ITV1 for the Group L finale against Panama, before returning to BBC One against DR Congo.

England vs Mexico is also being shown live on BBC One, with coverage beginning at midnight on Sunday following confirmation that the game will remain as a 1am BST kick-off as initially scheduled.

Former England internationals Wayne Rooney, Micah Richards and Joe Hart will be the punditry team once more, plus Alan Shearer on co-commentary alongside Guy Mowbray. Kelly Cates will host.

Live stream: The match is also available to watch live online via the BBC iPlayer and BBC Sport website.
