Andrey Santos hoping for debut as Manchester United head to Helsinki for opening summer contest
Manchester United kick off their latest pre-season campaign against Wrexham today.
Man Utd travel to the Olympic Stadium in the Finnish capital of Helsinki for a first test of the summer against Championship opposition, ahead of further friendlies to come against Rosenborg, Atletico Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Leeds and AC Milan, which will see them head to Norway, Sweden, the Republic of Ireland and Poland.
Michael Carrick has been confirmed as the Red Devils’ next permanent manager after a successful interim stint in charge and is set to hand a debut to new signing Andrey Santos, who joined from Chelsea earlier this week in a transfer worth £50million.
He is the only recent arrival in United’s travelling squad, with Youri Tielemans taking a break following his World Cup exertions with Belgium and Karl Darlow in the final stages of his recovery from a minor procedure undertaken at the end of last season.
Nearly all of Carrick’s World Cup contingent have yet to resume club duties, including Bruno Fernandes, Matheus Cunha, Senne Lammens, Amad Diallo, Diogo Dalot, Noussair Mazraoui and Altay Bayindir, while the likes of Lisandro Martinez, Kobbie Mainoo and Marcus Rashford are all still at the tournament.
Tyler Fletcher is back though having not played a minute for Scotland in North America after his surprise late call-up, though Benjamin Sesko is still working his way back from an injury and Manuel Ugarte is set for several months on the sidelines with knee ligament damage suffered with Uruguay that required surgery.
United’s squad includes a blend of experience and youth, with the likes of Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw set to be involved after their respective World Cup snubs by England boss Thomas Tuchel, alongside a raft of youngsters including Shea Lacey and Chido Obi.
