It has been a flawless chapter at Paris Saint-Germain for Luis Enrique Martínez García. After guiding Les Parisiens to a domestic treble in his first season in charge, Enrique did one better by leading them to a maiden UEFA Champions League title following the exit of Kylian Mbappé, as well as spearheading them to a FIFA Club World Cup Final. He’s won 10 out of a potential 12 trophies with Les Parisiens, earning praise from the likes of Keinan Davis and staking his claim as one of the top coaches in the game.
However, it’s also undeniable that Enrique’s shelf life isn’t quite eternal: after coaching Barcelona B from 2008 to 2011, he then coached at Roma (2011-12), Celta de Vigo (2013-14), Barcelona (2014-17), and Spain (2018-19 and 2019-22) before taking his talents to PSG in 2023. PSG fans would undoubtedly be happy to see him stick around and extend his contract past its current expiry date of 2027, but history tells us that’s unlikely. With that being said, let’s take a look at Enrique’s most likely landing spots:
At 55 years of age, Enrique has spent the past decade working at three of the biggest football teams of this era: Barcelona and now PSG. It is unlikely he would consider dropping down to a second-tier team like Lazio, Bayer Leverkusen, or Villarreal; he’s likely to stay put at a club in the upper echelon. That’s why Chelsea could be an intriguing option, depending on how Liam Rosenior fares. The Blues are coming off a season in which they won the Club World Cup and the Conference League under Enzo Maresca. They have a seemingly endless transfer budget and arsenal of promising young stars that Enrique can refine into elite footballers, just like he’s done with the likes of Désire Doué and Vitinha. Having already tested his skills in LaLiga, Serie A, and Ligue 1, is it time for Enrique to make the jump to the Premier League?
