With only eight games to go of the 2024/25 Championship season, Sheffield United are matching league leaders Leeds United stride for stride on 80 points as we head down the home straight.
A 1-0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday afternoon meant that the Blades had done the double over their Steel City rivals for the first time since the 2005/06 campaign. Funnily enough, that term concluded with United winning automatic promotion to the Premier League.
While the recent win at Hillsborough will certainly fill Chris Wilder’s men with huge confidence, the job is far from over. Burnley are only two points behind the top two, and they have a far greater goal difference than the Blades. Plus, they still have to host the Blades in a few weeks time.
After the international break, United welcome Coventry City to Bramall Lane, a side that has won ten of their last 12 league games. The Sky Blues have been awesome to watch under Frank Lampard and they look as though they could be the team to beat if they finish in the play-off places. They also have to face Burnley the game after, so Lampard’s men could have a big say in how the automatic promotion places finish.
With this in mind, let’s take a look at the football odds from Betting Odds to see who they think will claim promotion.
It’s no surprise to see that Leeds United have the highest probability of achieving promotion considering their outstanding form throughout the season. The Whites have had a knack for winning games late on, evident in their recent come-from-behind wins against Sunderland and Sheffield United.
The Blades still have a couple of very tough games remaining, but if they can leave Turf Moor in second place, or perhaps better, in April, then they’ll feel very confident in finishing the campaign in style with just two games remaining after that fixture.
With just two points separating the top three, Burnley could yet even win the Championship. We’ve seen crazier things happen in this thrilling league. The Clarets have an unbelievable defensive record, conceding only 11 goals in 38 games.
The record for the fewest goals conceded in total in a season in England is held by Preston in the 22-game 1888/89 season and Mourinho’s Chelsea in 2004/05. Each side conceded just 15 goals all season. However, on a per-game basis, Burnley are on course to break the record, with 0.29 goals conceded per game so far.
Sunderland have been in the top six for the vast majority of the season, but inconsistencies of late has seen them drop off the top three’s pace. Currently on 69 points, the Mackems are still closer to the top two than they are to 6th, yet I think everyone knows they have already shifted their focus on the play-offs dates.
As mentioned earlier in the article, Coventry City are on fire at the moment under Frank Lampard. They’ve actually scored more goals than both the Blades and Burnley, and if they do finish in the play-off places then I don’t think anyone would be wanting to play them.
West Bromwich Albion have done exceptionally well to maintain their consistent performances and results throughout the course of the campaign, even in spite of losing Carlos Corberan midway through the season.
Under the experienced manager Tony Mowbray, the Baggies are unbeaten in their last six. However, they are only inside the top six on goal difference, with several fixtures remaining against fellow play-off hopefuls.
