Sixteen UEFA teams will qualify for the 2026 World Cup. The twelve group winners qualify directly while the remaining four sides are determined by play-offs involving the twelve group runners-up. 

England became the first European team to secure an automatic place following their 5-0 victory in Latvia last month.

France confirmed their place at the World Cup finals with an emphatic 4-0 success against Ukraine on Thursday. 

Kylian Mbappe was in the form of his life as the Real Madrid star hit a brace, with Micahel Olise and Hugo Ekitike also earning their names on the scoresheet. 

Didier Deschamps’ men will head to the tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada as a top favourite, with Les Bleus having reached the finals of the previous two editions. 

Meanwhile, Croatia guaranteed their World Cup spot by sealing a 3-1 comeback win over Faroe Islands on Friday. 

The European minnows took a shocking early lead, but Josko Gvardiol levelled the scores seven minutes later. 

Petar Musa put the hosts ahead in the second-half before Nikola Vlasic wrapped up victory with a third goal after 70 minutes.

Portugal suffered a shocking 2-0 loss to the Republic of Ireland on Thursday, but Roberto Martínez’s side will secure qualification if they beat Armenia on Sunday

The Netherlands played out a 1-1 draw with Poland, leaving the Dutch a point away from qualification. 

Spain will book their World Cup ticket if they overcome Georgia on Saturday and Turkey fail to win against Bulgaria

Austria will qualify if they defeat Cyprus and Bosnia & Herzegovina do not win against Romania. 

Switzerland will reach the World Cup finals if they defeat Sweden on Saturday and Kosovo fail to win against Slovenia.
