Which managers will be available in the summer?

With Tottenham and Manchester United announcing interim head coaches in the last month and Real Madrid not yet revealing the length of Alvaro Arbeloa’s current managerial contract, new managers are expected to be in high demand this summer.

After the 2026 North American World Cup many national team bosses could leave their post and become available for roles at some of the biggest clubs in Europe that are likely to become vacant.

However, some top mangers including Champions League winners Thomas Tuchel and Carlo Ancelotti have extended their contracts with their respective countries beyond this summer’s tournament, which could suggest they believe that international football is still the pinnacle of the game.

Here is a look at some of the managers that could be available in the summer and where they are likely to end up…

Julian Nagelsmann

The Germany manager’s contract is set to run out after the 2026 World Cup and he could be a candidate for the Manchester United job.

The 38-year-old signed a new deal with his nation in 2024, despite crashing out in the semi-final stage of their home European Championships to the eventual winners, Spain.

Strong spells at Hoffenheim, RB Leipzig before winning the Bundesliga title with Bayern Munich was enough for the German to earn the position of Germany manager in 2023.

Now just three years later, he has been linked with the United job if Michael Carrick does not carry on past this season.

Mauricio Pochettino

The United States boss has previously been manager of Paris St. Germain, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, and the latter is where he has been heavily linked with of late.

Pochettino enjoyed a strong spell in north London, reaching a Champions League final and finishing second in the Premier League – Tottenham highest ever position.

Spurs have hired Igor Tudor as an interim and it is plausible Pochettino replaces him after the World Cup.

Roberto Martinez

Another club in need of a manager this summer is Celtic, and Portugal manager Roberto Martinez is the current bookmakers’ favourite to take over the role.

The Spaniard most notably won the FA Cup with Wigan in 2013 and has managed Belgium, Swansea City and Motherwell.

Martinez’s contract runs out after the World Cup and he could be in line to take over the Celtic job.

The former Brighton manager left Marseille this month and could be looked at by clubs in need of a manager this summer.

The Italian had been linked with the Tottenham job before Igor Tudor took over as an interim but could be in contention for the permanent role in the summer.

Enzo Maresca

The Argentine will not be managing at the World Cup, but he is not currently in a job having left Chelsea in January.

He was instanly linked with a return to Manchester City, where he was a coach, after being sacked by Chelsea in January, and could be in line to for a move to the north of England.

Maresca was at the Manchester club as Pep Guardiola’s assistant between 2022 and 2023 before joining Leicester City in his first managerial role.

A reunion for Maresca could only happen if Guardiola leaves Manchester City this summer.

Oliver Glasner

The Austrian has said that he is going to leave his current club Crystal Palace this summer, and could be considered by both Spurs and Manchester United.

“A decision has already been taken, months ago. I had a meeting with Steve Paris in October, the international break.” he said in January 2026.

“We had a very long talk, and I told him I will not sign a new contract for Crystal Palace. We agreed at that time that it’s best to keep it between us.

“I told the team today, because I think now it’s important to have clarity.”

Glasner has won the FA Cup and Community Shield as Palace manager and the Europa League with Frankfurt.

Xabi Alonso Xabi Alonso (Photo by Denis Doyle/Getty Images) After winning an invincible Bundesliga title with Bayer Leverkusen, his move to become manager of Real Madrid looked destined to succeed, however he was sacked just over six months later. Despite the side only being four points off the top of the table, missing out on the top eight of the Champions League and losing to Barcelona in the Super Cup were big factors in the Spaniard losing his job. Even though he was sacked, many top clubs, including Manchester United, could look to bring in Alonso as permanent manager.
