After Paulinho’s new right adductor tendon injury announced on Friday, Abel Ferreira faces a selection puzzle. According to Globo.com, Palmeiras will be without five players on Sunday against Mirassol.
Paulinho, Ramón Sosa, Jhon Arias, Piquerez and Jefté are sidelined.
Arias hurt his right hamstring and Piquerez sustained right thigh oedema in the last match against Santos. Captain Gustavo Gómez was withdrawn at half-time with muscle discomfort, tests found no injury and he remains available.
With both left-backs out, Jefté returns only next year, Arthur is expected to cover on the left. Reworking the attack is trickier after Allan’s move to Manchester City and Arias’ setback.
One route is using Felipe Anderson centrally or on the left, with Mauricio on the right. Another is keeping Lucas Evangelista or Emiliano Martínez in midfield and pushing Andreas Pereira higher.
From the academy, centre-forward Heittor, who debuted in July, is an option. He came on last Wednesday, replacing Vitor Roque midway through the second half.
Top of the Brasileiro with a six-point lead over Flamengo and juggling two cups, Palmeiras are not expected to rest players. For Mirassol they are likely to field their best available XI.
Projected XI: Carlos Miguel, Giay, Gustavo Gómez, Murilo and Arthur, Marlon Freitas, Andreas Pereira, Felipe Anderson and Mauricio, Flaco López and Vitor Roque.
In the Copa do Brasil quarter-final second leg against Santos, they can lose by up to two goals and still progress, a three-goal defeat would force penalties.
