Preseason is built for players like Alex Gonzalez. With several senior stars still unavailable, the young winger was handed an opportunity against CE Europa and responded with a goal and an assist in FC Barcelona’s 4-1 victory.

According to SPORT, Gonzalez produced one of the standout performances in the closed-door friendly. The result itself carried limited importance, but his contribution continued a remarkably quick rise from youth football to Hansi Flick’s first-team environment.

A rapid rise through Barcelona’s ranks

Born in February 2007, Gonzalez is a 19-year-old attacker who primarily operates from the left wing. He is comfortable across the frontline, using his pace and associative play to attack space rather than simply waiting for the ball at his feet.

He was playing for CF Damm as recently as February before Barcelona moved to add him to the Juvenil A squad. Gonzalez made his Barca youth debut in April and signed a contract running until 2028.

That timeline makes his first-team involvement particularly impressive. He has barely had time to settle at La Masia, yet his physical condition, attitude and ability to cope with higher training intensity have already caught the attention of Flick’s staff.

Against Europa, Gonzalez entered during the second half and scored in the 58th minute. More importantly, he also added an assist, highlighting his all-round play.

Stylistically, he is very similar to Anthony Gordon. He is not a mazy dribbler who can get past his man through sheer eccentricity, but he is very smart and associative in the way he goes about his game.

Barcelona need to be cautious about his assessment. It would be easy to turn one preseason performance into another wonderkid story, but Barcelona must resist that temptation.

Gonzalez is still adapting to the club, and a friendly against third-tier opposition cannot predict whether he is ready for La Liga.

What it can show is personality. Young attackers often become cautious when promoted into senior surroundings. Gonzalez appears willing to run at defenders, enter scoring areas and take responsibility, qualities Flick has consistently valued.

His pathway will probably lead through Barca Atletic rather than directly into the first team. That is not a setback. Regular competitive football would give him the space to improve his decision-making and learn when to accelerate attacks rather than forcing them.

Still, Barcelona supporters should remember the name. Gonzalez has gone from Damm to scoring for Flick’s side within months. The sensible response is patience, but his first impression was exactly the kind a young winger needs to make.
