Flamengo’s second 2026 signing, Andrew, 24, lands in Rio on Tuesday night for medicals and a four-year deal. The 1.89 metres keeper cost about R$ 10 million, according to Globo.com.

Born in Duque de Caxias in Rio’s metropolitan area, he came through Botafogo’s academy. A devotee of former Brazil keeper Jefferson, he left at 20 without a senior game.

In Portugal he shone, starring in a win at Estadio da Luz against Benfica in 2022 and taking man of the match in a 0-0 with Sporting in 2023.

He joined Gil Vicente in 2021, becoming first choice the following year after Kritciuk’s injury. Across four and a half seasons he made 124 appearances, second most by a club goalkeeper, behind Paulo Jorge’s 200.

Last season he collected two player of the match awards and two goalkeeper of the month honours in October and November, voted by league coaches.

During 2022/23 he was on Paris Saint-Germain’s radar as a possible replacement for Keylor Navas, though talks did not advance.

He was in Brazil’s squad that won the 2023 Pan American Games against Chile, understudy to Mycael and playing once, then called for the 2024 Pre-Olympic.

In 2024 he learned of his mother’s death on the day of a match with Sporting, still played, and wept after the 4-0 defeat, earning praise for his conduct.

At Gil Vicente he improved with the ball, often stepping up like a sweeper in build-up, and he has saved four penalties in Portugal.
