Brighton have signed Union Saint-Gilloise striker Promise David, 25, on a season-long loan with an obligation to buy for £22 million if conditions are met. The Canada international’s move arrived with no prior rumours.
WeAreBrighton.com notes the trigger is likely appearance based. The 6ft 5in centre-forward offers a traditional number 9 profile, strong in the air with hold-up play and surprising pace.
His route has been unconventional, moving from Toronto and Vaughan Azzurri to Croatia’s NK Trnje at 18, then FC Tulsa, Valletta, Sirens and a prolific stint at Nomme Kalju from February 2023.
Union SG paid £340,000 in summer 2024. David hit 24 goals as they won a first Belgian league title in 90 years, added 15 last season with the Belgian Cup, and has two in four this term, totalling 41 in 82.
He chose Canada in 2025 after two Nigeria Under-23 caps. He has 14 caps and four goals, assisted Cyle Larin in a 1-1 World Cup draw with Bosnia and Herzegovina for Canada’s first finals point, and scored in a 2-1 defeat to Switzerland as they advanced from the group for the first time.
The Brighton and Union SG link likely helped shape a deal that lets Albion assess him for a season before a permanent move. If he excels, it would set a Union SG sale record and make him the second-most expensive Canadian after Jonathan David.
