While the Ballon d'Or has been awarded every year since 1956, France Football has only ever bestowed the honorary title of “Super Ballon d'Or” once in history.
It was in 1989 that the French magazine decided to honor the best footballer of the previous three decades.
Alfredo Di Stéfano (Spain) was the recipient, on December 24, 1989, ahead of Johan Cruyff (Netherlands) and Michel Platini (France). His trophy is now on display at the Real Madrid museum, inside the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.
The Buenos Aires native stood out as one of the greatest players of all time, scoring 306 goals and providing 45 assists in 392 matches for Real Madrid.
He won two Ballon d'Ors thanks to his achievements with Los Merengues and the Spanish national team, in 1957 and 1959.
