Southampton are reportedly set to sign Nottingham Forest defender Zach Abbott on loan with an option to buy.

Despite minimal senior experience, the 20-year-old appears to be the answer to Harwood-Bellis’ departure. But who is he, and why have the Saints opted to sign the English centre-back to replace their best defender?

Who is He?

Zach Abbott rose through the Nottingham Forest academy, joining them at the age of 11.

He made his professional debut for the Reds in the EFL Cup – a 3-0 victory over Grimsby in 2022. Two years later, he picked up his first start against Newcastle in the Carabao Cup at just 18.

The academy graduate has been in and around the senior setup for a while now, making a loan move at this stage of his career seem a necessary step for his development.

Abbott accumulated 10 senior appearances last season, with the majority (7) coming in the Europa League. While a natural centre-back, he was often deployed as a right-back, demonstrating defensive flexibility.

Speaking to Lee Clarke, a sports journalist covering Nottingham Forest at GRV Media, he explained how Abbott has been utilised and the type of player Saints fans should expect.

“He’s come through our academy, and when called upon he’s largely done well. Forest have only really seen him as a full back, but even though he’s naturally a centre-back, he’s largely done alright.

“He’s a big lad, perhaps with old-fashioned defensive tendencies, but he can play the ball out from the back too. The best compliment I can give him is that he’s lively and will very much give everything in every single game.”

Why Have Southampton Chosen Him?

Standing at approximately 6’2″, the 20-year-old should bring an aerial presence, arriving as the joint-tallest centre-back for the Saints. In his Europa League spell last season, he won almost 60% of his aerial duels.

His most notable highlight of last season came against FC Midtjylland, where he played 120 minutes at right-back. The performance offered a glimpse of Abbott’s defensive potential, with 100% duel success, five clearances, and three recoveries amidst a 2-1 victory,

The ability to play both as a central defender and fill in on the right likely appealed to Southampton, who need versatile options as they head into another 46-game Championship season – one where they suffered injuries to both their right-backs (Mads Roerslev and Elias Jelert) before January last campaign.

Additionally, it’s been reported that the Saints weren’t willing to overpay for Taylor Harwood-Bellis’ replacement. Viking centre-back Henrik Falchener was reportedly a major target for the South Coast outfit, but the gap in valuation between clubs deterred any potential deal.

This is why Zach Abbott is an appealing option: no major upfront cost and the possibility of making it permanent if he endures a successful campaign.

However, replacing one of the best defenders in the Championship with someone who has a mere three league appearances to his name is definitely a risk, but one Southampton believe they can take.

They need to maintain their long-term vision, and Abbott fits that. He’s a player they believe will develop this season and, in turn, represents a sensible financial option for the long term, given his age, potential, and a loan-plus-option structure.

Daily Echo reporter Alfie House has stated the club sees Abbott as having a similar pedigree to Taylor Harwood-Bellis before his Championship-winning loan spell at Burnley in 2022.

With the addition of summer signing Keven Schlotterbeck, who impressed on his debut at the weekend, alongside existing central defensive options Nathan Wood and Jack Stephens, the side already has a wealth of experience. Abbott should be eased into the team and will be surrounded by Championship-level experience, helping smooth his transition.

Abbott’s profile also appears to suit what Southampton need from their centre-backs. The Saints require a defender who is aggressive in duels, both aerially and on the ground, while also being comfortable enough in possession to play forward through a press. Abbott’s physicality and willingness to compete fit the first part of that profile.

At the same time, his composure to play out from the back suggests he could adapt to Southampton’s system – one that operates at its best with defenders who can break the lines and help initiate attacks.

He may lack the experience of Harwood-Bellis, but stylistically, there are clear traits that make the 20-year-old an appealing long-term option.
