Rennes have opened the search for the 16th coach of the Pinault era after Habib Beye, with Franck Haise viewed as a leading option. On Monday, reserve coach Sébastien Tambouret led first-team training with Pierre-Alexandre Lelièvre and Maxime Le Marchand.

L'Équipe reports the Haise route gathered momentum on Monday. Free since his Nice stint ended in late December, the 54-year-old previously worked in Rennes’ academy from 2006 to 2012 and could reunite with president Arnaud Pouille, performance chief Laurent Bessière, Brice Samba and recruitment head Alexandre Pasquini.

He would also find Mahdi Camara, a target at Nice last summer. Talks have begun, though nothing was agreed on Monday, with Haise in Quebec with family. Questions remain over his readiness to take over mid-season.

Rennes are also considering alternatives should Haise not materialise. Free agents include Patrick Vieira, Laurent Blanc and Will Still. In-post options, harder to prise, range from Didier Digard at Le Havre to Alexandre Dujeux at Angers, though no step has been taken.

The decision needs alignment from Pouille, the Pinault family and sporting director Loïc Désiré, who must present ideas and fit with the future coach.

If Europe is missed under Beye’s successor, would he then be at risk too? It would reflect a club unsure where to turn, yet the squad still has enough to return to Europe in spring if well led.
