When the Estadio Banorte, formerly known as Estadio Azteca, fully reopens for the 2026 Liga MX Apertura, as many as three teams could share the famed venue.

The stadium has spent the last two years undergoing major renovations, as the historic yet ageing venue is prepared to host a third World Cup after staging the 1970 and 1986 tournaments.

As we move ever closer to its reopening, news reports that three teams are set to share the Estadio Banorte for the 2026-27 season.

Club América returning home

Ever since its inauguration in August 1966, Club América have made called Estadio Azteca their home.

Within six years of moving into this grand arena, América won their first Liga MX title, beating Chivas and Atlas to win the league. Over the years, Las Águilas have shared the stadium with rivals like Necaxa, Atlante and Cruz Azul, but they have been the only consistent occupiers.

To bide time before moving into their permanent home, América set up at the Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes, where they won the 2024 Apertura and Clausura titles.

Cruz Azul back at a familiar ground… but still not their own

La Máquina have gone from stadium to stadium in recent years as they aim to solve their homeless crisis.

Right now, the club is playing in Puebla, more than 100km south of the Mexican capital. In recent campaigns, the club have played at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario, the home of Pumas and at the Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes, the temporary home of Club América.

Despite their consistent moves, Cruz Azul have managed to compete at the highest level and even lifted the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup, destroying the Vancouver Whitecaps in the final.

Talks remain ongoing for the club to find a permanent home in Mexico City, but for now, they seem set to join Club América at the Estadio Banorte, a place that they previously called home until 2023.

Atlante set for an emotional comeback

It has been 20 years since Atlante were sent down to the second division of Mexican football. That relegation ultimately led to their departure from the Estadio Azteca.

Since then, the club has migrated to Cancún to play at the Estadio Olímpico Andrés Quintana Roo, moving more than 1,500km away from the city that they have called home ever since being founded in 1918.

Currently, the club is playing slightly closer to its origins, in the town of Zacatepec de Hidalgo at the Estadio Agustín Coruco Díaz

While promotions and relegations remain scrapped, Atlante will make a long-awaited return to the top division after its owners, TV Azteca, bought the rights of Mazatlán FC from Grupo Salinas to force its way back.
