The personnel situation at right-back remains a key issue for FC Bayern ahead of the Champions League away game at PSV Eindhoven. Coach Vincent Kompany spoke about the situation at the press conference ahead of the final game of the league phase – and in particular whether Sacha Boey is an option

The French right-back is finally ready to return to action after weeks of forced absence, but is not yet a possibility for the starting eleven. „Sacha hasn’t trained that often yet, but is finally out of this illness. He showed good impressions in training today that he can help us for a few minutes. He won’t start yet – but it’s a stroke of luck that he’s fit again. This comes at the right time for us,“ explained Kompany

One thing is clear: Boey will be a wild card at most in Eindhoven. After a long period of suffering with a persistent infection and the associated training backlog, the Bayern coach does not want to take any risks. For Kompany, the most important thing is that the 25-year-old is back in the squad – especially with a view to the coming weeks, in which the personnel situation in defence should gradually ease

Musiala and Davies face „tough integration“

In addition to Boey, Kompany also spoke about returnees Jamal Musiala and Alphonso Davies, who are moving closer to the team again after injury and illness respectively. The Belgian made it clear that there is no longer a cautious approach at this stage of the season. „We all agree that these are two good players. Then, unfortunately, there is no soft integration at this stage of the season, but a hard integration. There are minutes on performance, that’s our puzzle,“ said Kompany

For the Bayern coach, it is crucial that the squad is in top form in time for the hot phase of the season. „We are close to having a great squad at the most important time of the season. It is important that we have everyone at full strength in February and March. Stanisic and Laimer will also be back then,“ he stressed

The prospect of the return of Josip Stanisic and Konrad Laimer in particular shows that the current improvisations on the defensive flanks are only intended to be a temporary solution. In Eindhoven, however, Kompany will have to continue to be creative – also because there is no classic right-back for the starting eleven

Kompany spares no one

Regardless of the personnel issues, Kompany made it clear that there will be no rest against PSV. Despite having already secured a place in the last 16, FC Bayern still have their place in the league phase at stake – and therefore possible advantages in the rest of the Champions League. „We’re not resting anyone. We’re in the situation of having almost the entire squad with us. Only a few still need to integrate after their return. Then there are the players who have played a lot of minutes,“ explained the 39-year-old

The coach also warned against underestimating the Dutch top club. „We know the qualities of PSV, we can’t just come and play with any players. We have confidence in our squad. We believe in those who will start tomorrow,“ said Kompany

He also explained that possible decisions against individual regulars were understandable: „And if there is a decision that a player won’t start, then we believe that in this case there is a lack of freshness,“ said the Bayern coach

Who will start at right back?

The specific line-up at right-back therefore remains open. Kompany has tried out various solutions there in recent matches, most recently with Tom Bischof. Alternatively, a system or role shift would be conceivable again, for example with Joshua Kimmich, who is familiar with this position from previous Bayern and DFB times

Kompany also said the following about the right-back position: „It might be a left-back again.“ Alphonso Davies or Hiroki Ito could therefore also be considered. As always before games, Kompany did not reveal his starting eleven.
