Flamengo playmaker Arrascaeta faces a spell out after suffering a left wrist fracture on Uruguay duty, an injury likely to rule him out of key end-season matches.

During Uruguay’s friendly with South Korea on Monday 28, he slipped unchallenged and braced his left hand on the turf. Before the incident he had scored and supplied an assist. Coach Diego Forlán substituted him at 32 minutes of the second half.

Scans confirmed the fracture and the need for surgery. Such procedures stabilise the bone with plates or screws, and any knock to the area risks displacement, so contact sport is prohibited during recovery. Football still involves falls, physical contests and arm use for balance, all of which carry impact risk.

IFAB Law 4 allows protective equipment if it is safe, subject to the referee’s approval. Soft, lightweight, padded items are permitted, but hard or rigid splints can be refused to prevent danger in collisions.

The injury is a Colles fracture, with a recovery window of 60 to 90 days suggested, although this can vary by age, severity, surgical technique and individual factors. According to ESPN, Flamengo’s medical staff project about six weeks, and the club has not set an official timeframe.

He is expected to miss both Libertadores semi-finals legs against Estudiantes, on 15 October in La Plata and 22 at the Maracanã. Flamengo have requested his immediate return to Brazil for further assessment before surgery, with club doctor Fernando Sassaki approving the move.
