Amorin initially insisted he would be sticking by the Manchester United goalkeeper
Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has reportedly omitted Andre Onana from the matchday squad against Newcastle.
Onana was at fault for both Lyon goals in his side's 2-2 draw in the Europa League on Thursday. Firstly failing to deal with Thiago Almada’s cross for the opener before spilling a shot from Georges Mikautadze which allowed Rayan Cherki to equalise with seconds left on the clock.
This performance came a day after he had been branded "one of the worst goalkeepers" in the club’s history by former Man United midfielder Nemanja Matic.
Although, despite the errors, Amorim immediately came out in defence of Onana and whilst acknowledging the mistakes, the Portuguese tactician was dismissive when asked if the Cameroonian would be dropped.
“No, we continue to do the same thing,” he told reporters. “Training, seeing the games, trying to choose the best eleven to win every match.
“When one player has a mistake, the whole team has a mistake so we continue like that.
“The important thing is to focus on the next game for the league and then the second leg against Lyon.”
However, in a stunning u-turn, reports have claimed that Amorim has decided to leave Onana out of the Man Utd squad for today’s Premier League clash away at Newcastle.
It is understood that Onana has been given time to ‘rest and disconnect’. In addition, it is expected he will be in contention to face Lyon in the return leg of the quarter-final tie at Old Trafford on Thursday as a permanent change is unlikely.
In Onana’s absence, Altay Bayindir gets a rare start in goal. In fact, this will park the Turkey international’s Premier League debut despite joining the Red Devils in the summer of 2023.
