Arrascaeta turned heads as he arrived at the Maracanã wearing special glasses emitting green light before Flamengo’s match with Mirassol, according to Globo.com.

Flamengo went on to beat Mirassol 2-0 on Wednesday at the Maracanã in a rescheduled round four fixture. The result left them one point behind leaders Palmeiras, their narrowest gap since the start of the competition.

The accessory is an AVA device called Circádia, created by engineer Rodrigo Santana, designed to help regulate a player’s sleep and wake cycle.

It shines 480-nanometre green light onto the retina, activating melanopsin, which raises cortisol and triggers a state of alertness.

The technology addresses the fact everyday rhythms favour morning alertness and night-time rest, while footballers often need to perform late in the evening. The device recalibrates the circadian system to keep the athlete fully awake at night.

It is worn for only a few minutes and costs about R$ 1,200.
