Gunners favourite fumed after late controversy in Carabao Cup triumph at Portman Road

Mikel Arteta had to push Myles Lewis-Skelly away from the officials after Arsenal's win over Ipswich.

The Gunners beat Ipswich 4-2 at Portman Road on Tuesday night to ease into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup, maintaining their perfect start to the season across all competitions.

Those two Ipswich goals came once the match was already wrapped up, with Anis Mehmeti and former Arsenal striker Chuba Akpom giving the home fans something to cheer.

Akpom's goal was a controversial one, coming after he seemingly dragged Lewis-Skelly to the floor as the pair ran towards the box.

Referee Peter Bankes waved away those appeals and, with VAR not in operation in the Carabao Cup until the semi-finals, the goal stood.

Lewis-Skelly was furious at that decision and continued his complaints after the match, remonstrating with the assistant referee as he followed him towards the referee.

Mikel Merino tried to keep Lewis-Skelly away from the officials, urging him to calm down, before Arteta came over and twice told Lewis-Skelly to walk away.

Shortly after that, Akpom appeared to joke about the incident with Bukayo Saka and Ezri Konsa.

Konsa, who had also confronted the officials after the match, had his arms outstretched as he spoke to Akpom.

Saka then seemingly asked Akpom if it had been a foul and the pair both laughed as the Ipswich striker nodded.

As Konsa pointed back to the area of the pitch where it had happened, Saka acted out dragging someone's arm back.

Akpom joined the Arsenal academy at the age of six, progressing through the ranks and making his competitive debut in 2013 under former boss Arsene Wenger.

The 30-year-old never established himself in the Arsenal first team and had six loan spells away from the club before permanently joining Greek outfit PAOK in the summer of 2018, also playing for Middlesbrough and Ajax.
