Enzo Maresca and Brian Barry-Murphy's relationship could be beneficial now that the Italian has been named Manchester City boss
One of the biggest high-profile signings last summer in League One was the loan move that brought Chelsea's Omari Kellyman to Cardiff City.
The 20-year-old was one of Aston Villa's hottest prospects just two years ago, which prompted the Blues to spend up to £19 million on him when he was just 18.
Injury halted any progression into first-team affairs at Stamford Bridge, making just three under-21 appearances in his debut campaign due to numerous hamstring issues, which he had surgery on in March last year. Nevertheless, it was a surprise to see him in the third tier.
Evidently, Kellyman was too good for that level, and the 13 goal involvements in just 26 starts showcased that. A Championship move would have made more sense, but the relationship between the Cardiff and Chelsea bosses saw the third tier as his next destination.
Both Brian Barry-Murphy and then-Blues boss Enzo Maresca have a great relationship from their time at Manchester City. They spent time as manager of the Elite Development Squad at the Etihad — in fact, the Cardiff head coach succeeded Maresca in 2021 when he left for Parma.
The two only spent one year together at City when Maresca returned to assist Pep Guardiola in the 2022/23 campaign, but they clearly got along, and when Kellyman arrived at Cardiff, Barry-Murphy joked that he "sought permission" from the Italian, and that the then-Chelsea boss was "very supportive of the move."

Maresca's time at Chelsea would end shortly after Kellyman's loan move was sanctioned, but after half a year out of management, the Italian has been named as Pep Guardiola's successor after the legendary manager stepped down from his role at Manchester City at the conclusion of last season.
It's well-known that Manchester City's Elite Development Squad is one of the best academy set-ups in England, winning four of the last six Premier League 2 titles and producing the likes of Liam Delap, Cole Palmer, CJ Egan-Riley, Roméo Lavia and Rico Lewis during that time, just to name five.
Barry-Murphy knows that more than anyone, too, as it was under his umbrella that City's under-21s won back-to-back development league titles in 2022 and 2023.
It would make sense for the Cardiff boss to look to utilise his connections with one of Europe's biggest clubs to try and bolster an already exciting young squad in the Welsh capital with even more emerging talent, and now with Maresca in charge at the Etihad Stadium, it would seem a no-brainer.
The two's relationship helped secure Kellyman, a player of at least a Championship standard, while the Bluebirds were in League One, so perhaps some youngsters who are close to breaking into the City squad in the Premier League will be allowed to spend a year in the second tier under Barry-Murphy in the upcoming campaign?

A lot of Cardiff fans will be expecting to survive in the Championship in the upcoming season with the fresh, youth-centred direction that Barry-Murphy has taken them on thus far.
The reality is, though, that a former third-tier side should see survival as the main goal next season, and if they can avoid a relegation battle completely, it would be deemed a success. Having some of Manchester City's brightest young stars on the books would go a long way to ensuring that happens.
Which Manchester City youngster would you want to see at Cardiff City this season, Bluebirds fans? Let us know in the comments.
The likes of Max Alleyne, Jaden Heskey, Divine Mukasa and Divin Mubama all had productive loan spells in the Championship last season, and a second year under someone like Barry-Murphy could see them reach the next level of their development and become Premier League regulars.
Then, players such as Ryan McAidoo and Charlie Gray, who didn't spend time on loan last season, could be set for their first spells outside the City fold, where they both made their senior debuts in cup competitions.
Both are incredibly highly-rated, and if the Championship proves to be their destination, Maresca may deem Cardiff the best destination, due to his relationship with the Bluebirds boss.
Barry-Murphy will need to strike a good balance between young talents and experienced heads as Cardiff venture back into the Championship, but those younger stars could prove to be amongst the best in the division if they come from Manchester City.
