Chelsea’s season is reaching an exciting climax, but those in charge will already be looking ahead to the summer and thinking about their plans for the future.
Today, CaughtOffside have translated claims from Spain that one current first choice player could be on the way out. Wesley Fofana was supposed to be a foundational piece of this new era, but instead he’s spent 3 seasons in a row out injured.
Now it sems like Chelsea are willing to sell the France international. Fichajes are quoted as saying that the Blues want to raise as much as €500m by selling off a host of first team assets, including Fofana.
Given we spent around €80m so to sign him from Leicester, we are certain to make a loss if we do so. In fact, there’s no guarantee anyone will pay anything at all given his injury record.
Given how deep we’re in on him financially, it probably actually makes more sense to keep him around and just hope he can play an injury free season. There isn’t much to be gained in selling him as we would only be adding a major loss to the books. Of course we should be planning for him to never be fit again – that’s only sensible given the course of his Chelsea career so far – but selling him doesn’t really help.
The amount we would get for him wouldn’t make a major difference to our budgets. So we’re better off keeping him around with our fingers crossed than selling him at a precipitous loss.

Our expectation for this summer is that a number of defenders are sold – we’d think Axel Disasi and Trevoh Chalobah are likely to go, given the evidence of the last couple of windows. Then a new first choice option is brought in to compete with Tosin Adarabioyo and Benoit Badiashile to play alongside Levi Colwill.
