Big-spending London City Lionesses came back from a goal down to beat WSL2 side Crystal Palace 2-1 in the Subway Women’s League Cup – and Eagles boss Jo Potter says her team should have come away with something from the game.
“We’re disappointed, actually, because I thought we were excellent first half,” she told the club website afterwards. “Obviously, they’re going to come out and push and try and get a goal and try and push us back, but I thought we responded to it really well.”
Adding that she thought her side were unlucky when it came to the marginal officiating decisions, she said: “I thought we did enough to get something from that game.
“We’d have been disappointed to draw it at one point and take it to penalties.”
But looking ahead, she explained that she hoped such a strong performance against higher-level opposition would give her team a boost for the forthcoming matches, despite a slow start in WSL2.
“We looked threatening going forward, our structure looked brilliant. We picked that up again from Sunday [when they beat Nottingham Forest away 2-1]. There’s a lot of positives to take. You can tell that we’re growing and we’re trying to play a certain way. It’s going to take a while and it’s coming together nicely. It’s an exciting time moving forward.
“We’ve got to prove where we’re at and we’ve got to put it on show. It’s OK saying it but we’ve got to go out and put on performances that show that and prove that. The players did that tonight. I was immensely proud of every single player that stepped on that pitch tonight.
“We were better in possession tonight than we were on Sunday, against a higher level of opposition.
“It’s key. It’s really important for us. The players are going to feel that and take confidence from it.”
Crystal Palace currently sit sixth in WSL2, with a win, a draw and a loss from their first three league games – but Potter feels her side are now starting to give a true account of their capabilities.
“I think we’ve shown what we’re about over the last few games,” she said. “We’ve just got to keep doing that, got to keep improving, got to keep improving performances and results, keep pushing and keep going this season.”
Their next match is a trip to Durham on Sunday, 28th September.
