Why Crystal Palace’s Maxence Lacroix is unlikely to go to the World Cup with France

It was an injury that afforded Maxence Lacroix his chance to impress for France, but he may be reliant on another if he is to go to this summer’s FIFA World Cup, according to a report from L’Équipe.

Having come off the bench in the 2-1 win over Brazil, Lacroix profited from Dayot Upamecano’s red card in that game to start against Colombia on Sunday night. The Crystal Palace defender certainly took his chance to impress at the heart of the defence, as Les Bleus ran out 3-1 winners. His performance earned an ‘8’ rating from L’Équipe and a ‘7’ from Get French Football News.

However, could it be too little too late? L’Équipe believe so, stating that Didier Deschamps has already established his hierarchy of defenders. Upamecano, William Saliba, Ibrahima Konaté, and Lucas Hernandez are all ahead of him in the pecking order, the publication understands.

Deschamps could, of course, take a fifth centre-back, which cannot be ruled out. Téléfoot understands that this will be the case. That being so, Lacroix may find himself in contention with Chelsea’s Wesley Fofana, for example, who retains the France manager’s trust, despite the recurring injury problems.
