Tottenham have sacked Ange Postecoglou and replaced him with Thomas Frank, and speaking ahead of Soccer Aid, Harry Redknapp had his say.

Postecoglou was sacked after a disappointing league campaign that saw them finish 17th with 22 defeats, but the Australian managed to guide his side to European glory in the Europa League, with Champions League qualification also confirmed.

Redknapp said: “They had a disaster in the league but it was nice to get a trophy. The season was poor, fourth from bottom. They were lucky really that there were three worse teams. It was no surprise (that Ange got sacked). When the season finished Daniel (Levy) never came out and said he was staying so you knew he wasn’t staying.”

Once the news of his departure was confirmed there was an outpour of appreciation for Postecoglou from his players, but Redknapp wasn’t buying it: “They all are (appreciative), that’s football,” he said. “That’s what footballers do. ‘Oh we loved the previous manager.’ Well then why didn’t you try a bit harder? You might not have finished fourth from bottom.

“It’s the same old message, ‘The king is dead, long live the king.’ That’s football. They all come out ‘Oh the manager was great’ and the new manager comes and he’ll be great and when he goes, (they’ll say) ‘Oh we’re sorry to see him go’. That’s football. You mustn’t take any notice of what they say.”

Newly announced Spurs manager Frank had done an excellent job with Brentford in the seven years he was at the helm in west London, securing top flight promotion and a subsequent four campaigns in England’s top division. Redknapp said he is in support of the appointment of the Dane: “He looks a good guy. I don’t know him but he’s done a great job at Brentford and I wish him well.

“Spurs have had a lot of good managers in the last few years. Conte has gone and won a title in Italy, Mourinho, it’s incredible the list. Look how well Nuno has done at Nottingham Forest this year. They’ve all been at Tottenham and all had a go. Let’s hope Frank can do well.”
