Chelsea rounded off pre-season in front of a near-capacity crowd at Stamford Bridge by beating La Liga side Real Sociedad 3-1 on Saturday.

Goals from Chelsea’s new £117 million man, Morgan Rogers, and two from João Pedro saw the home side comfortably dispatch the Copa del Rey winners.

The afternoon didn’t go without controversy. World Cup runner-up Enzo Fernández made his first appearance of the season despite speculation surrounding his future in west London.

Fernández, who has been the subject of interest during this window, notably from Manchester City, was at the centre of a mini-deadline on Friday as Chelsea’s £120 million ‘take-it-or-leave-it’ deadline passed without anything materialising.

It is understood that those terms, which were once on the table and fully communicated to Enzo’s representatives, have now been withdrawn, with any new attempt still waiting to be tested. As far as things stand at Stamford Bridge, it is business as usual.

The unpredictability and lack of transparency have caused matters to turn sour in the stands, something new manager Xabi Alonso and the club really don’t need with the Premier League getting underway next week.

As the teams were warming up, stadium announcer Lee Parker started reading out the Chelsea line-up. When the 25-year-old’s name was announced as part of the substitutes’ bench, pockets of boos emerged.

With Chelsea 2-1 up at the time, Alonso started to ring the changes on the hour mark. The Argentine was one of four players to come off the bench, and many Chelsea supporters made their feelings known about their No. 8.

Nobody can put a finger on exactly what the supporters were venting their anger against, given it could have been either his World Cup impact - where the midfielder scored the equaliser against England before Argentina went on to win 2-1 - or the way his representatives have acted during the transfer saga.

Equally, chants for Fernández were heard in support of Chelsea’s vice-captain. What had initially been a 50/50 split quickly turned into at least 70/30 in favour of Fernández.

Regardless of where you stand on the Fernández saga, whether you want him to stay or want him to go, there should be a genuine consensus that Chelsea, the player’s representatives and the player himself need to show some transparency over his future.

In Chelsea’s defence, they have, in their eyes, set a deadline of 5pm on August 14, bringing an end to the saga, and it is expected that Fernández will be a Chelsea player for the 2026/27 season. The responsibility for controlling the noise is now firmly in the player’s hands, and the constant cycle of news will only intensify between now and September 1.

With less than two weeks to go in the summer transfer window, Chelsea can’t afford to sell Fernández without a ready-made replacement waiting to come through the door. A blend of experience and a proven big-game pedigree can’t simply be handpicked off the market. With such limited time remaining in the window, can Chelsea really replace a midfielder who offers something different to those already at the club?

It remains to be seen, but with each passing day, that challenge becomes greater. If Chelsea have no replacement in mind, then all communication with any potential suitors needs to be cut. Despite the noise, Fernández has still not formally told Chelsea in public that he wants to leave the club.

The reality is that there is no right or wrong side to be on. The fans should not be the ones left dealing with the consequences of uncertainty created by the player. One thing that should be a genuine consensus is that if Fernández is wearing the blue of Chelsea come the September 1 deadline, he will have the full support of Stamford Bridge.
