Arsenal were set to take on Leicester this weekend in the WSL, but the game has been preemptively postponed due to the Gunners’ involvement in the Champions Cup.

Why has Arsenal vs Leicester been postponed?

Postponing a game ahead of the run-in for WSL teams is a rarity and for once the quality of pitches aren’t at fault.

Arsenal have been forced to postpone their game against Leicester this weekend due to their appearance in the Champions Cup.

The Gunners earned a spot in the competition after winning the Champions League last season.

This year’s tournament will be the first of it’s kind, with Arsenal hoping to lift the inaugural title.

Renee Slegers’ team plays Moroccan side AS FAR on Wednesday night and they will be confident on making it to the final against a very different opponent than they’re used to.

Should they make it to the final Arsenal will play the winner of Corinthians vs Gotham FC on Sunday.

Regardless of if they make the final or not, Arsenal vs Leicester will not take place this weekend.

That is because the Champions Cup final will take place at the Emirates Stadium – the same venue where Arsenal were set to take on Leicester in the WSL.

There is no official date for when the WSL fixture will be played yet.

Why not playing Leicester is bad for Arsenal

Having a league game moved is never ideal, but for Arsenal this weekend it is pretty disastrous.

Renee Slegers has finally got her side in the form that they are expected to show this year.

The Gunners shocked Chelsea last weekend, beating their London rivals 2-0 away from home to close the gap to just three points between the teams.

It is the team’s defence that has been turning heads of late. Arsenal have conceded just one goal in six games and look almost impossible to break down.

With that being said, it is no surprise that the team currently third in the WSL were fancied to dominate Leicester this weekend.

Not playing against the Foxes will give both Manchester United and Tottenham the chance to catch up to Arsenal. Even though they will still have a game in hand, wins for their rivals this weekend would apply more pressure onto the Gunners.

Of course the opportunity to take home silverware outweighs Arsenal’s concerns about the WSL and they are clear favourites to win the inaugural Champions Cup.
