Why Is Oriol Romeu’s Signing Huge for Southampton?

Oriol Romeu is set for a return to St. Mary’s, joining as a free agent after leaving Barcelona in August. Fans have been excited to reunite with the Spanish midfielder, who has reportedly claimed that Southampton is a place he feels is “his”.

But why is this a massive signing, and could his impact be instrumental for the rest of the season, and beyond?

Terms of the Deal

After being dismissed by Barcelona in August, Romeu has been left without a club for the start of the campaign.

For the past month, he has reportedly been in discussion with Southampton over contract negotiations, even featuring on Southampton show Early Doors recently, with Matt Le Tissier.

The 34-year-old has signed a deal that runs until June 2026, with an option to extend it until 2027.

“It’s just brilliant. It’s a no-brainer. He’s such a brilliant footballer but such a brilliant person as well. I couldn’t wait to see him on Monday when he came in. He’s going to be so important for us.”

It feels like the perfect move for both parties. Romeu, who made 256 appearances for Southampton and recorded the most yellow cards ever in red and white, feels at home on the South Coast, and the Saints are crying out for experience to steer their youthful squad in the right direction.

What Will He Bring on the Pitch?

Given Shea Charles’ hamstring injury, and Flynn Downes’ constant illnesses, it meant that a midfield option was always on the cards to be brought in. Romeu feels like the perfect solution.

Alongside his vast experience of clubs such as Chelsea, Girona and Barcelona, he’ll provide valuable composure to hopefully spread in and amongst the side. A hectic display against QPR highlighted a lack of leaders. With Jack Stephens as the only distinguishable leader on the pitch, there was little commanding presence, leading to panicked clearances and misplaced passes, which would’ve been capitalised on against better opposition.

And that’s where Oriol Romeu comes in. Despite not being in his prime, he still made 31 appearances for Girona last season, recording five starts in the Champions League.

In the 2024-25 campaign, Romeu featured in 1479 minutes — a tally likely to be replicated throughout the rest of the season at Southampton. He operated in the 93rd percentile for forward pass completion, which could aid the Saints’ aims of playing more direct football. While he’s not the most progressive player, his possessions won, at the 74th percentile, could be utilised during the press and help Southampton’s structure without the ball.

His Output Off the Pitch

With the Saints sitting 19th in the Championship, an on-pitch presence will be crucial. However, off the pitch could be where his effect is most notable. A leader in the dressing room who knows this club inside and out will be massive in trying to change the atmosphere at the club.

“I feel lucky to be back, and motivated to push as much as I can. I’ve felt around the club and the city how much respect and love I’m getting. It’s special. I want to give it back with good games, good performances, and with professionalism and respect.”

In a period of time where Southampton’s hierarchy is being heavily scrutinised, the signing of a fan-favourite could be key in turning a potential negative atmosphere into a positive one, especially if he features against Sheffield Wednesday this Saturday.

His attachment to the club is clear. If all goes well, Romeu could look to stay on for a further year. His presence alone has rekindled Saints fans’ excitement and he could provide that short and long-term spark that’s been missing thus far.

Now, whether he lights up the pitch is up for debate, but one thing is for certain: The Saints have got their leader, and a player that will be crucial in guiding them out of the relegation conversation.
