Why Kostas Tsimikas can’t return to Liverpool despite Roma struggles

Kostas Tsimikas’ loan spell at Roma has largely failed to ignite, and the Greek international now finds himself in a difficult position as the January transfer window approaches.

The left-back has disappointed since his arrival from Liverpool last summer, failing to convince manager Gian Piero Gasperini of his long-term suitability for the Giallorossi project. Gasperini has recently opted for alternative solutions on the flank, including an adapted Wesley or Devyne Rensch, leaving Tsimikas firmly on the periphery of the squad.

While Roma would ideally like to terminate the dry loan early and send the defender back to Merseyside, the situation is far from straightforward. The primary obstacle is Liverpool’s squad registration limit; the Reds’ roster is currently at its maximum capacity for non-homegrown players, meaning Arne Slot would have no space to register Tsimikas if he were to return mid-season. This list problem at Anfield effectively leaves the player in limbo, as he cannot easily be reintegrated into the Premier League side’s competitive setup.

Consequently, the most logical path forward would be for Liverpool to find a new loan destination for Tsimikas, yet even that remains a challenge. Given his underwhelming performances in the capital, finding a new club willing to guarantee consistent playing time and value the player is proving difficult for the English side. For now, Tsimikas remains stuck between a club that no longer considers him part of its plans and a parent club that literally has no room for his return.
