An insight into the thought process behind Barcelona star Lamine Yamal’s choice of new jersey number has on Wednesday been provided.

The name of wide-man Lamine has of course taken its place front and centre in the headlines in Catalunya’s capital across the day to date.

This comes after the attacking sensation was rewarded for his increasingly prominent role in Barcelona’s first-team ranks with a new shirt number.

This past season, Lamine donned the no.27 when lining out for the Blaugrana.

Now considered one of, if not Barca’s most important attacking figure, though, the expectation was that the 17-year-old was in line to take hold of the club’s iconic 10 jersey for next season.

It therefore came as something of a surprise when, in the end, Lamine opted for the 19.

What, though, convinced him to opt for as much, rather than the 10?

As alluded to above, an insight into as much has this evening been provided.

As per a report from Mundo Deportivo, the breakout La Masia prodigy did not deem it appropriate to yet inherit the no.10, a move which would have been disrespectful to its current owner, Ansu Fati:

‘It should also be noted that Lamine Yamal wants to respect the fact that the number 10 is the possession of Ansu Fati, who has returned to Barça after his loan to Brighton and who the Blaugrana club is counting on for this campaign.’
