Leeds United have mutually terminated Max Wober’s contract a year early. The 28-year-old is close to joining Schalke on a free, The Athletic reports, with medical tests under way in Germany.

Wober arrived from RB Salzburg for £10m in January 2023 on a deal to 2027, but played only 28 times for Leeds after two loan spells.

He made 25 Bundesliga outings for Borussia Monchengladbach, then suffered a serious knee injury on his Werder Bremen debut last season. He featured only three times and Bremen declined a permanent option.

The centre-back had signalled a wish to report for pre-season, yet was among several seniors left out of the USA tour. A permanent departure has looked increasingly likely.

It is understood a sell-on clause from his £10m switch entitled Salzburg to a cut of any onward fee. Combined with last season’s injury, a sale would have yielded little, while termination removes a Premier League wage from the books.

Wober was among those who used relegation release clauses to join Monchengladbach in 2023 after Leeds dropped into the Championship. Schalke have spent the past three years in the second tier, earned promotion back to the Bundesliga, and count the 1996/97 UEFA Cup among their honours.
