Why Leeds United cannot appeal Gabriel Gudmundsson’s red at Crystal Palace

Leeds United left Selhurst Park aggrieved after Gabriel Gudmundsson was sent off in the 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace, and there is no route to appeal.

Leeds Live reports that referee Thomas Bramall appeared to forget the defender had already been booked before showing a second caution for a tackle on Ismaila Sarr deep into first-half stoppage time, then producing the red.

Daniel Farke felt the mistake was plain, and he struggled to fathom why Brennan Johnson did not receive the same punishment for a similar second-half challenge while on a booking.

Unlike straight reds, yellow cards cannot be appealed unless there is mistaken identity. Each caution is treated as a single, subjective decision even if it totals a dismissal, so Gudmundsson will miss Saturday night’s home meeting with Brentford.

It is Leeds’ first red card for a player since December 2023. While Gudmundsson is a model of consistency, his ban could simplify Farke’s defensive call.

Jayden Bogle was the defender to miss out from the start at Palace with the chosen back five in good form. The suspension likely means the defence that began the second half gets the nod.

James Justin moved to the left, Bogle took the right wing-back role, and Jaka Bijol was flanked by Joe Rodon and Pascal Struijk as Leeds secured their first Premier League clean sheet for two months.
