Liam Rosenior has faced a sharp backlash in England after Chelsea’s Champions League exit to PSG, with the Guardian dubbing him LinkedIn Liam.
The last-16 tie read 5-2 after the first leg, before a 3-0 defeat on Tuesday sealed Chelsea’s elimination. Appointed in early January, the former Strasbourg coach had already overseen a Carabao Cup exit to Arsenal and a patchy league run, including a 1-0 loss to Newcastle last Saturday.
The Guardian’s critique focused on presentation and persona, citing boardroom jargon, an immaculate image, fashionable glasses, pristine trainers and theatrical touchline movement.
On taking the job, Rosenior insisted he was not arrogant, only confident in his ability, and said he had enjoyed success in every role, whether interim, assistant or head coach, with the groups he had worked with.
Reaction to the PSG reverse was scathing, with the Daily Mail calling it a humiliation and the Telegraph labelling it a nightmarish evening.
The Sun said Rosenior was already fighting to keep his job, while also arguing that many of Chelsea’s problems stem from the owners, sporting directors and their strategy on and off the pitch.
