Liverpool’s defence needs a refresh this summer.
Despite winning the Premier League 12 months ago the Reds have left a lot to be desired at the back this season and some big changes are needed.
A deal to bring Jeremy Jacquet to Anfield has already been announced, but several of Liverpool’s current defensive options could be on their way out.
Ibrahima Konate is into the final weeks of his deal, and negotiations over an extension have stalled. Joe Gomez is also facing an uncertain future, whilst Andy Robertson’s exit has already been confirmed.
Richard Hughes will be assessing his options, and he should look to hijack a signing from his former side Bournemouth.
The Reds aren’t the only side in the market for defensive reinforcements, Bournemouth are looking to replace the outgoing Marcos Senesi.
The Argentine defender is leaving on a free transfer, and has been linked with Liverpool, but Hughes’ attention should be on who the Cherries are trying to sign as a replacement.
The south coast club are making an ambitious move for Sporting CP’s central defender Ousmane Diomande, and Liverpool should do everything they can to hijack it.
That’s according to a report from Football Insider, who claim Bournemouth have identified Diomande as a priority target as they look to replace Senesi.
The Ivorian has proven himself as a more than capable defender in Portugal and now looks ready to take the next step.
Although he has struggled with injuries this season, Diomande is a key player for Sporting, and several Premier League clubs have been linked with a move.
His contract contains an €80 million (~£70m) release clause, but multiple reports have claimed the 22-year-old will be available for less than that this summer.
Liverpool will face tough competition for Diomande, but they will also be able to offer the player a lot – especially if Konate does leave.
Bournemouth will be able to offer European football next season, but it is still unknown who their next head coach will be, and the offer of playing every other week at Anfield may be too much for Diomande to turn down.
