Arne Slot delivered the Premier League title in his first season at Liverpool.
Impressed with the Dutchman’s success, the Merseyside titans backed him heavily in the transfer market, investing over £450 million on new signings.
However, things have not worked out. Despite their struggles, the Reds are on the cusp of securing a place in next season’s Champions League.
The club supporters are still unhappy with Slot and made their feelings known during Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Anfield.
Slot was booed by the home fans after he brought off youngster Rio Ngumoha in the second half.
The club’s hierarchy are not planning to part company with him, but managers don’t generally last long once they lose the faith of their own supporters.
Alonso’s stint at Real Madrid wasn’t a success. He lasted less than a year at the Santiago Bernabeu after signing a three-year contract last summer.
The Spaniard’s stock remains high, as Chelsea have put him at the top of their shortlist to replace Liam Rosenior as manager.
Liverpool should act quickly to win the race for Alonso. The former midfielder knows the club well, having played there under Rafael Benitez between 2004 and 2009.
He is adored at Anfield and also has the advantage of previously working with Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong at Bayer Leverkusen.
Alonso worked wonders at Leverkusen, guiding them to their first Bundesliga title in 2023-24 with an unbeaten domestic season.
The Black and Reds also reached the Europa League final that season, eventually losing to Atalanta.
Alonso was heavily linked with the Liverpool role two years ago when Jurgen Klopp announced he was leaving the club.
However, he stayed at Leverkusen for another season. Alonso is now available, and Liverpool should act quickly to appoint him.
