Luke Williams has ruled out a move from Peterborough United to sign Millwall’s Macaulay Langstaff

Freshly-appointed Peterborough United head coach Luke Williams has confirmed he won’t be signing Millwall’s Macauley Langstaff, having previously worked with the striker in a fruitful stint at Notts County.

Posh suffered an extremely disappointing start to the 2025/26 League One campaign, which saw them rooted to the bottom of the table.

With such poor form looking like a direct ticket to the fourth-tier, the higher-ups at the Weston Homes Stadium decided that they had no choice but to make a managerial switch and sacked Darren Ferguson.

The 53-year-old has experienced four different spells as Posh boss, leading the club to four promotions and three EFL Trophy titles, but was replaced by Luke Williams in October.

Williams won his first game in charge of Peterborough, knocking third-tier promotion hopefuls Cardiff City out of the FA Cup and will aim to repeat that success against Wimbledon in League One.

With an uphill fight against relegation ahead of him, Posh’s new manager is likely aiming to bring in a number of fresh operators in the January transfer window. However, there is one addition the 43-year-old has already ruled out.

Luke Williams rules out Peterborough United move for Millwall’s Macauley Langstaff

As soon as Williams arrived at the West Homes Stadium, links started emerging with Millwall forward Macauley Langstaff.

The pair enjoyed great success together when they were both at Notts County, with Williams overseeing Langstaff’s outrageous 2022/23 campaign, when he scored 42 goals in 47 National League matches.

Langstaff is yet to start a game for Millwall this season and with Peterborough in desperate need of goals, a move for the striker to link up with Williams seemed an obvious one to make.

Whilst this was a tantalising prospect for Posh supporters, their new boss has now shut down any chance of that move happening.

When speaking to Peterboroughtoday, Williams revealed that a move for Langstaff isn’t likely to happen in January, due to the striker’s age. Peterborough, of course, have a philosophy of recruiting young talent to be developed and eventually sold on at a significant profit, and while Langstaff would bring no shortage of goalscoring pedigree, the limited future growth and resale value with the 28-year-old means that there appears to be little chance of a reunion

Whilst admitting that he was a “great player and a great character”, the former Swansea man wasn’t willing to get any hopes up of a potential deal.

Millwall's Macauley Langstaff would’ve been a brilliant addition for Luke Willias Peterborough United

Given that Williams has now ruled out the reality of Langstaff joining Peterborough due to his age, but having the striker’s expertise would’ve been a huge boost for Posh.

After his fantastic 2022/23 campaign, the forward followed that up with 34 League Two goal contributions the following term and has been at Millwall ever since.

After working so well under Williams’ management in the past and seemingly not being able to start at the Den, it seemed like an opportunistic move for both parties to make.

No team has scored fewer goals than Peterborough United in League One this season, and any help in forward areas would’ve been greatly appreciated by most supporters.

That still may come, but not in the form of Langstaff.
